i was a roman there long after the days of western glory when it was just the business of empire and the romance of it was gone

you have to understand: we are false. this was the first thing harut and marut stressed to me; to any they met. then they tell you who they are: that they were angels and a third had come with them but turned back to heaven before the gateway closed. we are the temptation of god, personified by our deed. so we are here, falsely; to be false, plainly.
